The new contract was ratified on 4/25/2025 by a count of 98 for and 21 against.

Hello ESSO Members,

Just a quick note to give you all a heads up on this year’s vacation notices from Plant Ops. There has been a change in the new contract on the process of vacation requests. Even though we have not ratified the new contract, we feel that it is prudent for Plant Ops to pause the process until after we vote, which will be on April 25th. Sometime shortly after the 25th Plant Ops will put out the vacation notices. Any questions, just let me know.

Hello ESSO Memebers,

I wanted to let you all see the email that came in from Angela Scalzitti. She runs a college jumpstart program for children struggling for basic supplies to start college. These kids all wrote thank you notes that I wish you all could see, really touched my heart. ESSO stepped up and donated the money that the administration pulled from them. Check out the attached photo.

Hello ESSO Members,

Below is a report from our Union Secretary Beth Lucarelli.

Beth LucarelliRA Report
I was one of 1032 delegates who attended the March 2024 Representative Assembly in Rosemont.  A representative from IMRF gave the annual IMRF financial report, and they are 97.7% funded.  Two candidates were elected for NEA Directors of District 1 Bobby Rickmand and District 4, Karen Moore. Our representatives are hard at work trying to abolish Tier 2, getting ESPs more paid holidays, and getting retired members vision and dental coverage.  I also learned about a continued effort from our Representatives in the House to raise the minimum wage for ESPs to $22.00 per hour by 2027.   A portion of proposed legislation voted on was to clean up language, or language to include our newly created positions of early career representatives.  We discussed legislative amendments such as establishing free or reduced tuition at community colleges and four year institutions, providing free and healthy meals to all students, and school calendars being a mandatory subject of bargaining.  You can find out more about these topics and other changes our reps are trying to make for us right now at ieanea.org.  Login so you can see member only info, and join the RESPECT campaign to support Illinois’s ESPs.

Hello ESSO Members,

By now I’m sure you’re all aware of the change in how our seniority lists will be delivered to us. Each of you should have been sent a link from HR that allows you to download the latest report. We of course will still keep it updated on your ESSO website for your convenience.

Hello ESSO Members,

Please see the attached flyer promoting our School Board Communication Team. If there is anyone that is interested in being a part of one of these teams, please email me back and let me know.

The teams basically take board members out to a local restaurant for light conversation. It’s just a way to connect in a face to face manner with members of the Board of Education.

Hello ESSO Members,

Thanks to all of you that braved that horribly cold weather last Sunday to come out to the ESSO Christmas party. We had a really good turnout, and we all had a lot of fun bowling and B.S.ing with our work friends. The food was absolutely amazing. Thanks to Jason Welch for hooking us up with his BBQ guy, fantastic!

Congrats to those that snagged the door prizes. And huge respect to Jeremy Layton who won the 50/50 raffle we ran for Luis Nava and then turned around and donated his winnings to the Nava family. We raised $667.00. Thanks to everyone for donating to that cause. Luis, our thoughts are with you in this difficult time. Everyone have a great weekend.

Hello ESSO Members,

Thanks to those who came to the 7th annual Esso Family Picnic! A huge shout out to Jason Welch for getting us the most awesome BBQ. The bacon burnt ends were absolutely meat candy! A million thanks to Beth Lucarelli for doing such a great job with the toys for the kids. The entire Executive Committee helped out in their own way which made this, I think, the best picnic we’ve had. Webmaster Neville has also posted some thoughts on the day.

Hello ESSO Members,

Over the weekend we had our ESSO Picnic, What a great time it was with amazing food for eveyone that attended. I have to be honest with you when I say that this was my first time going to the picnic, it sure won’t be my last as a member. It was nice to see the comradery, solidarity and friendships at this picnic. Speaking of solidarity, we need that more then ever going into negotiations. Remember that we are STRONGER together then we are APART. UNION STRONG!

Hello ESSO Members,

We’ve added a new website under the Safety Information heading for air quality. It is called AirNow.gov. This website is very helpful to anyone that has allergies and would like to see what the current air quality is for the day.

Hello ESSO’s.

Recently our awesome Uniserve Associate, Carri Bonine, attended an NEA Member Benefits session. With the info she got, she created the attached document for all of us to check out.

** SPECIAL NOTE**

Please see attachment under the drop down box which is below the Lastest News heading.

ESSO Members,

As stated earlier an educated union leadership helps our membership when it comes to representation. With every opportunity that comes our union’s way the leadership will further educate itself. That being said on April 19th 2023, Tim Sheahan, Rob Schweig, Jason Welch, John Weber and Nick Lucarelli attened a Zoom Training Session from the company Labor Notes which covered Assertive Grievance Handling.

4/20/2023

ESSO Members,

We have one of our very own retiring soon. Kim Swanson, she has been with U46 for 27 years and has worked tirelessly for our membership throughout her career. I hope we can all come out and wish her a long and healthly reitrement on May 18th.

** Special Note**

Please see the attached flyer on our new Retirement Page.

ESSO Members,

We would like to thank the membership for electing us to represent our union at the IEA Regional Assembly this past March.

This is a brief summary of what occurred:

There were a total of 16 Proposed Bylaw Amendments.

5 out of the 16 PBA were passed.

The majority of the bylaw amendments were pertaining to our new dues restructuring.  Our new dues schedule will roll out over the next several years. Our ESSO president, Tim Sheahan stated in our last general membership meeting that the union will absorb any dues change, as our union has for the last several dues increases.

The board of IEA directors had several seats to be filled, and an election was conducted.  We heard from several candidates personally, and cast our votes for who we thought would best represent us as educational service providers.

For more details on who was elected, or business items that were discussed, head to ieanea.org.

It was a great experience to get more involved with our union, and learn more about the IEA.

Fraternally,

Nick and Beth Lucarelli

ESSO Members,

As we have all heard about 3 of our union officers, Rob Schweig, Jason Welch and John Weber that went to Seattle for a union conference last week, here are some notes from that conference below.

3-24-2023 – 3-26-2023

Rob Schweig, Jason Welch, and John Weber.

Represented ESSO in the NEA ESP Conference in Seattle WA.

We completed 3 seminars:

That is Not a Union Issue… Or is it? Investigating, Analyzing, and Addressing Member Concerns

Creating your Road Map to Union Leadership…

Passing the Torch… How to Embrace and Enhance the Next Generation of Leaders.

** Special Note**

It is very important for union leadership to always have ongoing education to help represent it’s membership. Without an educated union leadership, we as a union will not succeed.

NEA/RA Assembly Election Results

ESSO Members,

Thank you to all that took the time to vote for which candidate you wish to represent ESSO down in Orlando this July at the NEA/RA.

Not that many made the effort to vote, that’s a little disappointing, but 21 of us did. 10 voted for Matt Farrell and 11 voted for Michael Neville. THAT’S CLOSE!!!

I really appreciate both these guys for throwing their hat in the ring and volunteering to represent us. Michael will do a great job and I’m sure he’ll enjoy immersing himself in this huge national event.

Hello ESSO Members,

Tom Jarosz will be visiting Abbott tomorrow between 10:30am and 2:00pm (or until he gets tired).

Please feel free to stop by and say hello to him if you have a lunch break during that time period. He will be in the Teachers lounge on the second floor across from the Main Office. We will be giving him a card and the donation money while he is here. In total, we raised $800.00 at this point and I know other members that want to contribute so hopefully we can get a little more.

Thank you to everyone that bought a shirt or made a cash donation.

Hello ESSO Members,

Just a quick reminder that we will be having elections for Vice President, Secretary and Steward coming this spring as well. Look for upcoming information about these positions if you are interested. Let’s ALL stay INFORMED.

Hello again ESSO Members

From July 2-6 2023 will be the NEA/RA. It will be held in Orlando FL, and we can elect 1 delegate to go and represent ESSO. Click HERE to get to the information page for this event. ESSO will pay all expenses for the delegate to attend.

We will also elect 1 ESSO to be our Representative in Region 63 meetings for the term 2023-2025.

SO PAY ATTENTION, THIS IS TWO DIFFERENT POSITIONS. One is for the assembly in Orlando, and one is for a 2 year term as Region 63 Rep. That doesn’t mean the same person can’t run for both.

So we will run this election as we did for the IEA/RA recently. If anyone wants to nominate themselves or someone else, please send those nominations to Eric Peterson at ericpeterson@u-46.org before the deadline of February 22ndMAKE SURE YOU INDICATE CLEARLY WHICH POSITION YOU ARE ENTERING A NOMINATION FOR. REMEMBER 1 FOR ORLANDO ASSEMBLY AND 1 FOR REGION 63 REP.

Only nominees that are willing and able to accept a nomination will be included on the ballot for the election that will be held on 3/22/2023

If you have any questions, please contact Eric Peterson, ESSO Election Chairperson.

IMPORTANT REMINDER!!! Please read the message from Rob Yucuis on 1/31/2023 for the link access to support Tom Jarosz.

Hi Everyone,

We have just 4 days left for this link to be open and we’re a little shy of the goal we wanted to reach for Tom Jarosz. PLEASE consider purchasing a shirt or making a cash donation in support of one of our members.

Hello Everyone,

One of our own is in need of help. Tom Jarosz, the Night lead at Abbott has been struggling with stage four cancer for quite some time now. Currently he is out on a Medical leave. His medical bills keep climbing. I have started a fundraiser for Tom and his family. I am sending a link that you can purchase a “T” shirt, a long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, and or a hoodie.Just click on the item you want and you will go to the order form. If you chose to make a cash donation, stop in at Abbott and go to the main office. They can help you from there. Thank you in advance.

Here is also some infomation that was shared earlier about another memeber’s family that we can help. Jeff Hartje’s granddaughter has a benefit to help with medical bills. This benefit will be held on February 11th, proceeds to help pay some medical bills for Jeff Hartje’s Granddaughter. It is at the Four Seasons Sports 1745 DeKalb Avenue, Sycamore starting at 7pm. There is also a GoFundMe page set up as well. This is at GOFUNDME.com for Payton Cowan. Any other questions about this benefit please contact Brendon Lake (224)230-2256 or at Brendonlake10@yahoo.com.

Yes Covid sucks, but it didn’t keep us from having our annual Christmas bowling party. Attendance was about 1/2 though thanks to Covid. Really good food from North of the Border. We also got some pizzas later in the night from Mel’s Pizza. Plenty of food. Kurt Kies, Kim Swanson and Rob Schweig did all the heavy lifting.
